Carvings

This small lobby forms the private family entrance to the house. Its principal feature of interest is a pair of still-life carvings, in the manner of Grinling Gibbons, which came from Newbattle Abbey. There are also a number of fine paintings, including a flowerpiece by Benjamin Ferres, a portrait of Sir Thomas Wyatt by a follower of Holbein and a seascape attributed to Vollaires; on the stairs is a landscape by Jacob Ruisdael and a seascape by Edward Smythe.  Over the door into the Great Hall is a portrait of Michael 13th Marquis of Lothian with his guitar, by Marie-Claire Kerr.
