The Square Hall

Heraldic Plaster CeilingHeraldic Plaster CeilingIntroduces the interior work of Schomberg Scott - the heraldic wallpaper and the heraldic plaster ceiling which has the Sun in splendour and the Kerr stars as well as painted shields showing the arms of successive wives of the Marquises of Lothian. This room is also an introduction to the Lothian picture collection rich in Dutch and Italian Old Masters collected in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and formerly at Newbattle Abbey, near Dalkeith. Portraits by Kneller, Knapton and Robert Hunter adorn the walls and a striking table made from wood grown on Newbattle Estate is placed beneath an iron balustrade.
